Wednesday Word of the Day: Findability

Findability is an important part of making a website successful. As you might think, the name simple refers to how easy it is to find your content online. But the simple definition belies how difficult it is to both measure and aim for a website being easy to find.

There are many important steps to making your website easy to find, and most of them have to do with the way people think and the way that they search for information. One of the most important things you can do is to have an intuitive URL — almost half of internet traffic comes from typing a URL, so being the top hit on Google isn’t the only thing you have to try to accomplish. Your URL needs to make sense to your consumer base.

Now, being the top hit on Google is very important, this is generally known as Search Engine Optimization. There are ways to accomplish this: making sure your site has intuitive keywords that people will search for, use of meta tags, and avoidance of the use of frames. You can improve this over time by looking at your website traffic analytics and exploiting the things which are working for the site.

Advertising is also key to being findable. It is helpful to advertise on sites that are already related to what your website does, so that people who are on the look out for what you have to offer and are already looking online can easily link through to your site. You can also help people promote your site by putting up links for sharing on Facebook and Twitter.

Findability is also an important part of the website itself. You want users to be able to easily find what it is they are looking for within the site. We’re all familiar with how irritating it is to go to a website seeking the help number and being unable to find it, you don’t want to do the equivalent to people who have come to your site!
