Mike began in the fire service as a Reserve Firefighter in 1988 for the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Department for eight years while simultaneously working part-time as a photographer for a local newspaper, which was owned by the New York Times Company. When the department disbanded their reserve program, Mike worked full time as a journalist and photographer garnering more than two dozen national, regional, and state awards in both writing and photography. Mike went back into the fire service eight years ago, this time with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department in his current role as a Public Information Officer. The area has endured news events such as fires, mudslides, mass shootings, and oil spills, with Mike conducting interviews on local, national, and international news organizations, with many outlets using his photography.
