Have you been using Snapchat and you have no idea what the icons and emojis mean? Well, have no fear we have your complete guide to navigating the Snapchat world!

Snapchat has become one of the most influential platforms in social media for the younger generation. But with the platform being designed for the tech-savvy user, it can be a bit confusing for those just getting started.

Don't be intimidated! We're here to help you understand the basics.

Snapchat is a great tool to show off what happens day-to-day behind your brand - giving your consumers an inside look that makes your brand feel more relatable. You can upload images or 10-second-maximum videos that disappear once they're viewed.

So why would a brand want to invest in content that's just going to disappear?

Because 60% of 13 to 34-year-olds use SnapChat on a day to day basis with over 9 billion video views EVERY DAY! What's more... this is a platform that more and more people are using that requires active engagement.

Snapchat videos by nature require the full attention of the viewer - you only have access to the content for a limited amount of time. Snapchat has enabled replays, but still, all content will eventually disappear. Snapchat is also "scrappy" video - meaning raw, real video and no editing - minimal investment for such a great return in viewer engagement!

So, I've now convinced you that Snapchat is worth checking out. You may have already set up your account, and now you see all these different icons.

What do they mean?! I've broken it all down for you.

*All of the icons below are for direct messages - things that are not shared on your story but are between 2 people or a specified group of users.

Gold Star - someone has replayed your message (In the last 24 hours you can replay 1 direct snapchat)

Yellow Heart - You are #1 best friends with each other. You send the most snaps to this person, and they send the most snaps back to you

Red Heart - You have been #1 best friends with each other for two weeks straight

Pink Hearts - You have been #1 best friends with each other for two months straight! This take true dedication!

Baby - A new friend that you have just added

Face with Sunglasses - One of your best friends is one of their best friends. You send a lot of snaps to a person on their best friends list

Grimacing Face - Your #1 best friend is their #1 best friend. Same Best Friend!!

Smirking Face - You are one of their best friends... but they are not a best friends of yours! Lots of times they send a lot of snaps to you, but you don't often respond.

Smiling Face - Another best friend of yours. You exchange a lot of snaps back and forth.

Fire - Snapstreak! You have snapped this person consecutively for a least 2 days

Hundred - 100 day snapstreak! This is the ultimate goal for many snapchat users!

Hourglass - Your snapstreak is about to end! A lot people will send random messages just to keep the streak alive

Birthday Cake - if your friend has the Birthday Party feature enabled in the settings, you will see when it is their birthday!

You might also see emojis that appear next to celebrities names in your friend's list.

Verified accounts get to choose a personalized emoji next to their name!

Last but not least, you will see icons (not emojis) that show and change next to snaps that you send.

Understanding these icons is enough to get you started with the basics of Snapchat engagement.

Get out there are share your fun content for your brand, get to know your followers and create those fire streaks!
